I appreciate that the following is going to be a bit of a long shot, and also could be tied to our specific site, but here goes in hope.

I have run ABTutor for near on a year now. Steadily over the last six months, the computers (client machines) have been coming up with more and more error messages and have been failing to log on to student profiles successfully. svchost.exe and lsass.exe, both system processes, have been crashing either before or during the student logon process regularly of recent, and profiles have not built correctly or login has failed altogether.

Out of desperation and after trying many other things, my network team set up a policy to disable the abclient process a week or two ago, to see if it made any difference. Sadly, I have not had a single problem since.

I am now stuck. My network team, ever helpfully, will simply say that ABTutor is causing the problems and will remove it. And I can see why too, as the errors seen cause me massive problems. Yet, this would be a waste of the money spent, and I use the software every single lesson, so I would dearly miss it.

None of this occured in the trial period, so I could not spot any potential problems in that time frame. I am totally lost as to what is causing this, I do not know how ABTutor could be causing such massive problems, but the sad reality could be that this product is completely incompatible with this school's network.

I know that you would not understand the steup of our network environment - as a teacher and not technician to a degree neither do I! But, has anyone seen anything like this before? Can anyone offer any suggestions on things to try to see if I can solve the problems? And why was it fine to start with and has steadily got worse since?

This post is in hope from a slightly desperate teacher and user of ABTutor, which is a great product and has great functionality. I fear that within weeks I shall lose it and the waste of licence money forever...

Hello

These sorts of problems tend to arise when you apply Web Blocking or Web Logging policies. Do you use these? Also, please try to update your Tutor programs to the latest version 6.6.3 AND make sure all your clients are also updated to 6.6.3 as this version fixes problems when using our web filtering with third-party web filters and firewalls.

I do use these sorts of policies on a parmanent basis, so inspired by your comment I removed a series of web blocking and application blocking policies, so no policies at start up were applied at all. No difference unfortunately.

I have updated the tutor control program to 6.6.3, I did this in January after the release date. I am unsure on how to make sure that the clients are also updated to 6.6.3 though - the tool to check the client version says they are fine and the client version dsiplay tells me that they are version 6.6 - so I'm unsure how to check and make sure that they have this amendment applied. I have done nothing to apply an update to the client manually.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Finally, I have found a temporary work-around. I use ABT normally to start the computers up (which have Wake-on-Lan working fine). They will login OK if I connect up, then restart the client using the client maintainance menu before anyone logs in. This seems to clear the problems. This would incidcate that the issues are tied to something in the startup of the computer / service. Does this give any clues to anyone?
